Crowds Make Noise During, And Before, CNN Debate (TVNewser)
There was plenty of noise at the start of Thursday night's CNN debate, and before it. Erin Burnett hosted her show from the campus of the University of North Florida, with a loud crowd behind her. HuffPost: Following the debate, moderator Wolf Blitzer discussed how he stood his ground when challenged by GOP candidate Newt Gingrich. Gingrich had a fiery response in store for Blitzer after the moderator asked the candidate if he was "satisfied…with the level of transparency as far as [Mitt Romney's] personal finances?" Blitzer was referring to Romney's recent release of his tax records. Gingrich called Blitzer's question "nonsense," which caused the audience to erupt with applause. He then proposed that the four candidates "agree for the rest of the evening to only talk about issues that relate to governing America." Mediaite: Romney tried to play coy when asked about an ad that accuses Gingrich of calling Spanish a ghetto language, telling Blitzer, "I haven't seen the ad, so I'm sorry, I don't get to see all the TV ads," and later added, "I doubt that's my ad." Several minutes later, Blitzer circled back and said that CNN had verified that the ad was Romney's (not a SuperPAC's), and asked him to explain, again. NYT / The Caucus: Furious conservatives took to blogs and Twitter Thursday to vent their ire against what they allege is a conspiratorial dumping of twisted and manipulated negative attacks on Gingrich. The target of their fury: The Drudge Report. THR: The resurrection of Gingrich -- who pummeled heretofore front-runner Romney in the Jan. 21 South Carolina Republican primary -- already is directing millions of dollars in local television advertising to Florida, the next GOP battleground Jan. 31. Adweek: Romney and Romney PACs outspent Gingrich in South Carolina in TV advertising nearly 2-1, but it wasn't enough, according to a TVB analysis of spending in the state. paidContent: Ron Paul's campaign suffered a setback this week in its effort to identify who uploaded videos that appear to show the presidential candidate bashing a former rival's ties to China. A federal judge Wednesday refused the campaign's request for an order that would have forced YouTube and Twitter to disclose details about "NHLiberty4Paul." Several networks have asked the Mitt Romney campaign to stop airing an ad in Florida called "Mr. Washington Insider," which targets Newt Gingrich. The ad includes various news clips, both current and from Gingrich's days as House Speaker. Politico / Burns & Haberman: Via Politico's Reid Epstein, NBC News and Tom Brokaw are loudly objecting to the Romney campaign's use of footage from the 1990s in an ad blasting Gingrich over his House ethics charges. Miami Herald / Naked Politics: A Fort Lauderdale real estate agent tweeted this observation: "@TomBrokaw Against your express wishes, NBC Miami is running your Romney ad right now. Demand that NBC stop running it if you are serious." AdAge / Campaign Trail: Apparently former President Jimmy Carter is aghast with the aggressive campaigning by Republican Party hopefuls. Poynter / MediaWire: The Nevada Republican Party announced Friday afternoon that it will release up-to-the minute results of its Feb. 4 caucus via Twitter and Google, enabling anyone to get the latest information without relying on a news site's election map or the ticker at the bottom of a TV screen. News Corp. is in serious talks to hire former Bloomberg CEO Lex Fenwick to be the new chief of Wall Street Journal publisher Dow Jones, according to people familiar with the matter.
