The vogue for digital paywalls sweeping the news business has made it all the way to the top: Gannett, the nation's largest newspaper publisher, is planning to switch over all of its 80 community newspapers to a paid model by the end of the year, it announced during an investor day held in Manhattan Wednesday. NYT / Media Decoder At its first annual "investor day" conference in New York, Gannett said it hoped to increase annual revenue by 4 percent, in part by expanding its sports offerings and rolling out a new subscription model at its newspapers. paidContent Gannett said it is "playing offense" again after years of cuts and contraction. Its touchdown strategy is a sophisticated paywall system that the news giant says will both bolster local news reporting and deliver an extra $100 million in profits. The plan is ambitious, but is it realistic?

J.K. Rowling To Publish First Adult Novel (GalleyCat)
J.K. Rowling has inked a deal with Little, Brown Book Group and Little, Brown and Co. to publish her first novel for adults. The publisher did not reveal the title or publication date, but the novel will be published in print and eBook formats. Business Insider / The Wire The book would be Rowling's first since her successful Harry Potter series ended in 2007. However, don't get too excited to return to the magical world of Hogwarts, because that's not happening.

After Wednesday night's showdown during the Republican primary debate in Mesa, Ariz., GOP candidate Rick Santorum and debate moderator John King clashed during CNN's post-debate coverage. AdAge / Digital Presidential elections are always major events for the country, but the 2012 electoral cycle will also be historic for the digital advertising industry. Politicians' spending on digital advertising has doubled since the 2010 midterm elections, according to a survey by STRATA, and it's still only February.
Mets Asked To Use SNY As Collateral For Comcast And Time Warner Cable Investment (Forbes / SportsMoney)
It turns out that Comcast and Time Warner Cable want more than a 3 percent return on their potential $80 million investment in the New York Mets, the Major League Baseball team owned by Sterling Equities. According to sources who do not have permission to speak on the matter publicly but who have insight on the negotiations, the two cable companies, which are equity partners with the Mets in SportsNet New York, want the team to put up part of its 65 percent stake in the regional sports channel as collateral before agreeing to any deal. These sources say the Mets are also being asked to extend their deal with SNY, which is believed to run through the 2026 season, for a longer period at terms favorable to Comcast and Time Warner.
